1. Changing of the Guard The Changing of the Guard is an ostentatious ceremony that takes place in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace. It is something that's definitely worthwhile seeing if you're in London.

Also known as the Millenium Wheel, it stands 135 metres (443 ft) high on the western end of Jubilee Gardens, on the South Bank of the River Thames and takes approximately 30 minutes to ride.

3. Tower of London The tower's primary function was originally a fortress, a royal palace, and a prison (particularly for high status and royal prisoners).

4. Madame Tussauds No visit to London is complete without stopping off at this legendary waxworks. You will recognise lifelike famous figures, old and new.

5. The Globe Theatre The reconstructed Shakespeare's Globe on London's Bankside will be a valuable place to visit if you admire the more cultured side Britain has to offer.

7. Hyde Park Not so much a thing to "do" as a thing to sit and not do. Take a break from your sightseeing and rest your legs with a tasty picnic in this grand park.

8. The Natural History Museum Probably more appealing to visit if accompanied by curious children, but nonetheless probably still appealing to most people whether for a quick nose around or an extended visit because it doesn't matter, it's free to go in!

9. Shopping In London, you really can shop 'til you drop. Take your pick from upmarket department stores such as Harrods and Selfridges, or go boho and visit the markets in Camden or Portobello Road.
